College of Arts and Humanities | Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies | Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Monday, May 8, 2023 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm ONLINE

The Jews Are Coming (Ha’Yehudim Ba’im in Hebrew) is an award-winning Israeli sketch comedy satirizing Jewish history, from the Bible to modern Israel. The acclaimed show employs parody and sarcasm to comment on contemporary Israeli and Jewish social, political, and religious issues and seeks to inspire viewers to think critically about such topics. While admired by many, The Jews Are Coming had also attracted considerable criticism from Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews who called its content blasphemy and criticized the creators for ridiculing the Jewish faith. During this lively conversation, Assaf Beiser and Natalie Marcus, two of the show’s creators, will discuss the origins of the show, how they choose what to write about, and the controversy the show has generated. The event will feature clips from the show (in Hebrew with English subtitles).
