Maryland Intervention Shows Promise For Reducing Unnecessary ER Visits


An intervention to connect low-income uninsured and Medicaid patients to a reliable source of primary health care shows promise for reducing avoidable use of hospital emergency departments in Maryland.

 



Google Searches for "N-Word" Associated with Black Mortality
 

Google searches could unveil patterns in Black mortality rates across the US, according to a study led by Asst. Prof. David Chae. Researchers found that areas with greater levels of racism, as indexed by the proportion of Google searches containing the “n-word,” had higher mortality rates among Blacks.
 
 

Public Health Research@Maryland Day Showcased the Changing Climate and Health
 

More than 550 participants attended our third annual PHR@M Day, which featured the latest science on public health topics including the effects of extreme weather events on health and disease, marijuana’s impact on cognition and achievement in youth, city and county programs to support maternal and child health, and Maryland’s innovative approaches to improve health care and reduce costs. SPH Receives Three of Eight President's Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues Awards


Two students from the Department of Family Science, Christopher Gaines and Damian Waters, and the Maryland Center for Health Equity received President's Commission on Ethnic Minority Issues awards for their outstanding contributions to university and community equity efforts.

On May 4, 2015, the SPH held its first annual Honors Convocation in The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Kay Theater to recognize our outstanding students and their accomplishments in academics and service activities.

PhD Student Selected as Finalist in MD Innovate 4 Health Challenge for his Diabetes Prevention App


Junaed Siddiqui, behavioral and community health doctoral student, is the developer of ePuffin, an app that harnesses the booming popularity of wearable technology to incentivize behavioral change in adolescents with an elevated risk of developing diabetes (known as "prediabetic"). His app and corresponding business idea was selected as a finalist for the Maryland Innovate 4 Health Challenge, and he will present his app at The Health IT Conference on June 4, 2015.

Terps Who Inspire: The Advocate

Christopher Gaines, '15, student speaker for our 2015 commencement, has been a tireless advocate for disability issues at UMD. "People with disabilities have a lot of potential and capabilities that people don't see," he says. "There is more to me than just my disability or gait. I have accomplished a lot as a student and my disability did not hold me back."
