COVID-19 Rapid Response Training for Barbers & Stylists:
$1,000 Grant for Participating Shops and Salons
Barbers and stylists can help promote informed decision-making as a means to increase COVID19 vaccinations. Black-owned barbershops and beauty salons are invited to participate in a new national initiative, Shots at the Shop, that will train hair stylists and barbers to be health advocates for their community, dispel myths and disinformation about COVID-19 and assist people in making informed vaccine decisions. Together we can turn vaccine hesitancy into vaccine confidence, protect the health of our communities and get Black businesses fully reopened and thriving.
We’re looking for up to 1,000 shops and salons to join this nationwide effort made possible by a collaboration between the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity, the Black Coalition Against COVID and the beauty and personal care brand SheaMoisture.
Participating shops will receive a 4-hour online training from the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity entitled “COVID-19 Rapid Response Training for Barbers & Stylists: From Vaccine Hesitancy to Vaccine Confidence,” taught by national public health and medical experts along with barbers and stylists who have already become Certified Community Health Workers. The training is based upon the Health Advocates In-Reach and Research (HAIR) campaign, a culturally tailored, community-based intervention developed by UMD Center for Health Equity Director Stephen B. Thomas, PhD, that transforms barbershops and beauty salons into culturally relevant portals for health education and the delivery of public health and medical services.
SheaMoisture, a Liberian-founded company that supports Black entrepreneurship, is providing a $1,000 grant to each participating shop through a $1 million fund.
