Funding Success with Susan Winter - Fall 2016

Dr. Winter, drawing on her years of experience working at the National Science Foundation (NSF), will be hosting 2 information sessions this fall exploring key topics in funding success. Each session is a stand-alone seminar, which focuses on an important aspect of the funding cycle and proposal development process. These are designed to be participatory, therefore the maximum capacity will be capped at 30 people per session.

Session 1:
Topic – What are They Really Asking For? Diagramming an NSF Solicitation
Gain experience in understanding exactly what is being asked for in proposal solicitations. Using an NSF example, the group will learn how to a) diagram a solicitation – separating language that is standard for all solicitations from the meat of the request; b) interpret solicitation terminology; and c) better judge potential project fit. This session will be beneficial for anyone who wants to read solicitations, Dear Colleague letters, and program descriptions with fresh eyes and laser in on the most important aspects quickly and thoroughly. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample solicitation they would like to explore.

Session 2:
Topic - Meeting With Your Program Officer – A Preparation Checklist
Meeting with a program officer is often an excellent way to identify and better understand factors that can be critical to the success of your proposal. So how should you prepare for these important conversations/meetings? What questions should you ask? What should you be listening for? Join us for a behind the scenes look at what the program officer’s goals are – and how you can help them, help you, be successful. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample proposal idea that they would like to explore.

Susan Winter Bio
My research focuses on the social and organizational challenges of data reuse and large-scale collaboration among scientists acting within highly institutionalized sociotechnical systems. I was previously a Science Advisor in the Directorate for Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences, a Program Director, and Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Cyberinfrastructure at the National Science Foundation supporting distributed, interdisciplinary scientific collaboration for complex data-driven and computational science. I received my PhD from the University of Arizona, my MA from the Claremont Graduate University, and my BA from the University of California, Berkeley.
