Information about the showcase/workshop:
“Bow-tie & Friends," is an interactive art showcase and workshop dedicated to uplifting narratives of undocumented Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) immigrants through the art of tarot cards. As you may know, the immigration conversation at the national level frequently features the Hispanic/Latinx experience but so rarely discusses the AAPI narrative. Furthermore, the media often portrays certain immigrants as "good," typically those who are able to go to school, find work, and the like, while simultaneously portraying other immigrants as "bad" if they do not have these aforementioned qualities.

This project seeks to challenge these two obstacles undocumented AAPIs face. In the same way that traditional tarot cards have different meanings on each card, "Bow-tie & Friends" seeks to feature a different story and theme on each card in order to emphasize the multidimensional human experiences that undocumented AAPIs have. Through this, "Bow-tie & Friends" disrupts mainstream narratives that box undocumented immigrants in while also highlighting an underrepresented group within the immigration movement.
