Appreciation is a fundamental human need. Employees respond to appreciation expressed through recognition of their good work because it confirms that their work is valued. When employees and their work are valued, their satisfaction and productivity rises, and they are motivated to maintain and/or improve their good work. The President’s Office is recognizing our UMD community members for their accomplishments during the inauguration for the 2016-17 academic year. Administrative Professionals Conference

In July, Learning & Talent Development (L&TD) hosted an Administrative Professionals’ Conference on the College Park campus. Over 100 administrative professionals attended the conference, with the theme “Today Is All About You.” The conference accomplished a number of important objectives, among them, to provide an opportunity for administrative professionals to think critically about their personal wellbeing, career development, and workplace effectiveness. The first Keynote Speaker was Vice Admiral Raquel Bono, Director, Defense Health Agency Medical Corps, United States Navy. Vice Admiral Bono has the distinction of being the first female medical corps officer to attain the rank of Vice Admiral in U.S. Navy history and she is the highest ranking female of Asian Pacific Islander descent in U.S. Military history. Bono is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and has an Executive MBA from the Carson College of Business at Washington State University. The second Keynote Speaker was Ms. Jewel Washington, Assistant Vice President for University Human Resources since February 2015. Ms. Washington holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, guidance and counseling from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Arts degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University. She is certified in a variety of leadership development instruments, including Development Dimensions

International (DDI), Myers Briggs, and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership. Both keynote speakers encouraged conference attendees to consider their personal impact on their units, departments, and divisions, and their role at UMD. Participants were motivated to continue searching for opportunities to demonstrate passion, joy, and inspiration in their daily work and broaden their sphere of influence. Colleagues throughout the campus and from USM institutions facilitated workshops during three session blocks. The list of workshops included:  

UHR|CONNECT | Vol. 2, No. 9 Each of the sessions reflected the interconnectedness of personal wellbeing, career development, and workplace effectiveness. Based on a survey completed by many campus administrative professionals prior to the conference, the workshops featured interactive activities, discussions with colleagues, and inspiring content. Opportunities for introspection, engagement, and networking were cornerstones of this professional development experience. Participants were offered strategies to prioritize their mental and physical health, engage in meaningful and purposeful work, manage social media content, negotiate challenging interpersonal relationships, and connect with colleagues to explore developmental opportunities. The concept of personal wellness was explored, as well as what it

means to work in an engaged and inclusive workplace. Katie Hershey Conlon from the Center for Leadership and Organizational Change (CLOC) facilitated a session connected to the Thriving Workplace Initiative (TWI). More information about TWI can be found here: http://www.president.umd.edu/thriving-workplace. This year’s conference was co-chaired by Cyn Trombly Allen and Lauren Pazornick of the L&TD. A number of UHR colleagues helped to make the event possible: Jacqueline Richmond, Karen Proctor, Art Dwight, Angela Jackson and Cristophoros Beck. The event received high praise and many participants commented on the high level

of quality and outstanding care that characterized the conference. A special thank you to the following campus departments that provided donations and support to the conference: Public Safety, Division of Information Technology, Residential Facilities, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, College of Behavioral and Social Sciences , Dining Services, University Recreation & Wellness, Conferences & Visitor Services, Clark School of Engineering, University Alumni Association, Office of Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy, the Department of Transportation Services, College of Information Studies and Speckworks, Inc. Also to our presenters from Bowie State University, Center for Leadership and Organizational Change, Department of Resident Life, Office of Sustainability, School of Public Health, University Career Center & the President’s Promise, University Counseling Center, and University Marketing & Communications The Administrative Professionals’ Conference created so much buzz that in the upcoming year

Wellness Deadline is Fast Approaching

Select a Primary Care Physician, Complete a health risk assessment online at your carrier’s website: a. www.carefirst.com/statemd b. www.uhcmaryland.com c. www.my.kp.org/maryland Obtain your physician’s signature on a physician notification form showing that the physician saw the results of the risk assessment.

Remember, by completing the healthy activities by September 30, 2016, your primary care physician visits will be free through December 31, 2016.

Open Enrollment will be from October 13, 2016 – November 15, 2016. During open enrollment, you will have the opportunity to enroll in the benefit plans offered by the State of Maryland or to make changes to your current benefits elections.

The Annual Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will be held Monday, September 26, 2016 in the Colony Room from 9am – 2:00pm. Glucose and blood pressure screenings will be available.

The Office of Staff Relations will be conducting training on the Exempt and Nonexempt Memorandums of Understanding (MOU). These are the contracts between the university and the union governing bargaining union employees. MOUs are binding contracts all supervisors and managers must follow for applicable employees. An upcoming training session is scheduled for October 26, 2016, 1pm - 3pm. All supervisors are welcome and encouraged to attend if they have any questions about the union contracts.

Open Enrollment

Academic Calendar Change Recently, the Office of the Provost announced a change to the academic calendar. Beginning Fall 2016, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving will no longer be a class day, however, it will remain a normal business day. The semester overall retains the same number of class days, for both MWF and TuTh schedules, with the last day of classes on Monday, December 12. Please see the 2016-2017 Academic Calendar for more details.

Bill joined UHR in August as the Program Manager, Affirmative Action & Equal Opportunity Compliance. Bill comes to UHR after seventeen years at Dartmouth College where he worked as the Assistant Director of Equal Opportunity & Affirmative Action in Institutional Diversity & Equity; he also served as the ADA Compliance Officer for the Dartmouth campus. Bill will be working to enhance data integrity and collection methods to better inform leadership with regard to the university's workforce. Originally from Wisconsin, and UW Badger supporter, Bill looks forward to rejoining the B1G Ten environment and cheering for the Terps (most of the time...)

Maria Knox

Compensation & Classification Analyst

Maria is an experienced compensation professional with ten years of experience in human resources consulting. She has a proven track record in project management, leading compensation analyses, and systems development. Maria takes a methodical organized approach to problem solving and enjoys collaborating with clients to help support their human capital needs. Maria has worked with clients in a variety of industries including nonprofit, government contracting, technology, media and professional services. Her areas of compensation expertise include market pricing, base pay, and incentive administration. Maria has a Master’s degree in Human Communication Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication from Howard University and a Bachelor of Arts from Rowan University. She is also a Certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR), a member of WorldatWork, and a member of the Washington Area Compensation and Benefits Association (WACABA).

Compensation & Classification Analyst

Derek began his professional career in Human Resources in 2005 working as an HR Generalist for the City of Baltimore, leading and performing staffing and classification work in the City's Employees' Retirement Systems and Department of Public Works. After serving as an HR Generalist for 7 years, he accepted a position working for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission as a Senior Human Resources Specialist in the Department of Human Resources and Management. While there he provided expertise, service, and support to departments in the area of Classification and Compensation. Outside of his professional career, he is an active mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake.

Cristophoros “Cris” Beck Cris eagerly joined UHR in late May as a Human Resources Graduate Intern. Cris has been assisting with a variety of projects throughout UHR. Cris previously held positions at his alma mater, The University of Tampa, working in Admissions, the Office of Conduct and Orientation, and as the OSLE Council President. In these roles, he assisted students in transitioning in to the university and with discipline issues. Prior to working at The University of Tampa, he served in the United States Army and completed combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan before being medically retired. Cris is currently completing his Master’s in Human Resources Development at Bowie State University and holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Business from the University of Tampa. He is originally from Mississippi, loves to play golf, grill, and is preparing for his November wedding.

Teika Robinson joined the UHR team as the UHR I-9 Administrator & Data Analyst for the University of Maryland on August 29, 2016. She will support the UHR team by training and supervising compliance with the I-9/E-Verify System. Teika is a recent alum of St. Francis University where she received her Master of Human Resource Management. She comes to us with I-9/E-Verify & Compliance experience and data processing knowledge. She is excited to be here and will be a wonderful addition to our UHR Team.
