University of Maryland Very Special Food Drive
Donate Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for delivery when and where they are most needed
Let's join together to help those in our local community and those devastated by Harvey, Irma and Maria!
During the week of October 22-29, 2017, the University of Maryland celebrates a week of Fearless Ideas with Homecoming 2017. The Terp spirit of UMD will shine brightly all over campus and the College Park area.
For the first year ever, the Office of Community Engagement is teaming up with Food Recovery Network and The #GiveHealthy Movement to fill Homecoming with Terp spirit and community spirit. Did you know that, according to Feeding America, 193,000 residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland, experience food insecurity on a daily basis. UMD is located in this county and that means 14 percent of our neighbors don’t have adequate, reliable access to nutritious, affordable food.
Taking on a broader community perspective, thousands of our fellow citizens are in the midst of recuperation and recovery from the awful destruction of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. The Terp spirit tells us that we have the power to alleviate both of these tragedies today. To DONATE, pick out and purchase the food items at this website and they'll be delivered for you.
Beginning September 27 and ending on the Terp Homecoming Game on October 28th, The University of Maryland Office of Community Engagement is partnering with Food Recovery Network and The #GiveHealthy Movement is calling on the UMD and College Park communities to lend a hand to those in need by participating in this special, virtual food drive. A virtual food drive acts similarly to other online shopping experiences you participate in, but this time, to help those in need by providing fresh produce to our neighbors both in Prince George’s county who experience food insecurity, and our neighbors in disaster-struck locations.
We’re asking the University of Maryland community to come together and support those that are devastated by Harvey and Irma in a very unique and impactful way and continue the fight against food insecurity and hunger in our own community. Please consider making a donation today! Let’s show our fearless Terrapin spirit to help those in need.
Click the DONATE button, then select and pay for food items that have been specifically identified as “high need” by the area food banks in Prince George’s County and the areas recently hit by Harvey, Irma and Maria. We will work with our partners to deliver your food donation to where it is most needed by hurricane-affected food banks, and our partner organization here in College Park, MD.
Thanks for your support and GO TERPS ! !
About us:
The Office of Community Engagement facilitates connections between the University of Maryland and its surrounding neighbors. Established in 2012, the office has contributed to the University of Maryland public service mission by creating mutually collaborative educational, business, government, and community partnerships.
The University of Maryland Alumni Association is the heart of the university, inspiring lifelong connections with a global network of more than 361,000 alumni. Through dynamic programming, membership benefits and more than 50 regional, affinity and academic networks, the Alumni Association serves as a portal through which Terps can connect and engage with the university and each other.
Food Recovery Network (FRN) has become a national organization since its genesis at UMD in 2011. Since then, we’ve become the largest nonprofit fighting waste and hunger on college campuses and have grown to 230 chapters across the country recovering perfectly good food and ensuring it gets to those who need it most. To date, FRN has recovered 2.1 million pounds of food. We’re forever proud to come from Terp innovation-our UMD chapter has recovered over 190,000 pounds of food thus far. FRN has university chapters in 44 states, including areas that were affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma.
The #GiveHealthy Movement is designed to heighten public awareness that hunger is a health issue and to provide an easy way for people to donate healthy food through Amp Your Good's crowd-feeding platform. Crowd-Feeding enables groups in the United States and Canada to organize food drives designed to generate fresh produce donations — healthy fruits and vegetables. People donate by purchasing fruits and vegetables at Amp’s website and Amp delivers fresh produce directly to the hunger organization supported by the drive after the conclusion of the drive.
