Art Carnival with AIGA UMD and Paints and Shells

Come one and come all—AIGA UMD & Paints and Shells are hosting an art carnival! Flex your art knowledge with trivia, learn alongside a drawing demo, compete in a design challenge and even channel your inner Bob Ross! At this art carnival, you can choose your own adventure, and there’s something for everyone.

Honor Native Lands

As you enjoy tonight’s event, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on and acknowledge the Indigineous roots of the land that you're on. Every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams, and energy to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted. Truth and acknowledgment are critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage and difference.

The land that the University of Maryland and The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center resides on today is home to the Piscataway People, who were among the first in the Western Hemisphere to encounter European colonists. We pay respects to their elders past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today.

We encourage you to use a resource like native-land.ca to learn more about the Indigenous roots of the land you are on right now.

ACCESSING THE EVENT

Tonight’s event will be held on Gather.town. We recommend that you:

  • Use this link to join us between 6:45-7:00PM.
  • Please note: The link will not work before 6:45PM tonight.
  • Use a desktop or laptop with a mic and camera if possible.
  • Cell phones are possible, but some Gather.town features are not available from a mobile device.
  • Use Google Chrome or Firefox web browsers for best user experience.
  • That’s it! There’s nothing to install, no software to download.

How Gather works:

  • Gather is a video chat platform that has avatars move around a map. As you get close to other avatars, your videos will pop up and you will be able to chat.
  • Move around the space using the arrow keys.
  • By moving your avatar around you can have spontaneous conversations with those around you. These can be either one-on-one or small groups depending on how many people are around your avatar.

SCHEDULE

  • 6:45PM: Art Carnival will open—join early to explore our space!
  • 7:00PM: Art Carnival events will begin. We'll have four different rooms with a 30-minute event in each room.
