On Thursday, August 26th the department welcomed partners (from on-campus and off) and the Fall 2020 & 2021 cohorts of Master’s and PhD students to attend the Computer and Computational Sciences Research Day.

Co-hosted with UMIACS, the event featured more than 25 faculty talks in association with Applied Math and the iSchool, in the Antonov auditorium at the Iribe Center. The presentations offered a unique opportunity for the faculty researchers to give brief summaries of their current research.

“It was great to meet students from two cohorts face to face in our magnificent building, and welcome colleagues back after a long time working from home,” said Ramani Duraiswami, Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Education.

The topic areas presented at this event included Algorithms and Theory, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Computer Vision, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Network Systems, Programming Languages, Robotics, Virtual Reality and Visual Computing, and more.

"I was able to note some potential future research collaborations with professors other than my advisor, based on shared interests," said graduate student Wentao Gao.

The event was in person and was attended by over 115 students, faculty and guests and featured research posters from current graduate students.

“After a long break of major in-person activities in the Iribe Center due to the pandemic, it was fantastic to see life come back to our building, to showcase our strong research enterprise, and get new graduate students excited about joining our community.” said Matthias Zwicker, the chair of the Department of Computer Science.
