WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 - 6pm
ADELE H. STAMP STUDENT UNION, HOFF THEATER
"DIFFICULT DIALOGUES IN HIGHER EDUCATION: RACE, RACIAL JUSTICE, CIVIL DISCOURSE, AND FREE SPEECH"
Race, racial justice, civil discourse, and free speech have become controversial topics across higher education. These four major facets of life in the U.S. should not be incompatible or opposing constructs, yet the nature of the current political climate seems to artificially place them in contradiction. College and university campuses have become battlegrounds for the culture wars in ways that confound the fundamental mission of higher education. This highly interactive panel and audience discussion asks whether we are traveling inevitably toward greater polarization across race, class, religion, and political orientation or whether there is a path toward reunification.
This panel is open to the public. Reserved seating will be available for conference attendees.
"SPOTLIGHT ON YOU: A PECHA KUCHA STYLE PRESENTATION"
The previously scheduled Pechu Kucha event has been replaced with a "Conversation Cafe" event which will include a dinner buffet. All registrants are welcome to attend.
PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS

PRESENTERS: Kelly E. Maxwell and Shana Schoem, The Program Intergroup Relations, University of Michigan
FEE: $100

We will introduce and practice several skills and concepts that are useful in perspective taking in interpersonal interactions including empathy, inquiry, multipartiality and exposing power dynamics. Additionally, we will engage in case studies that explore the opportunities and challenges associated with digital media when participating in face-to-face dialogues.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 - 2:00pm - 5:00pm
"STARTING & SUSTAINING A DIALOGUE PROGRAM ON YOUR CAMPUS"
PRESENTER: Jyotsna Vanapalli, Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center
FEE: $100
The DDNRC is often asked to consult with universities and colleges about starting (or re-booting) difficult dialogue programs. In this session, we will examine questions useful in determining institutional readiness, explore different dialogue frameworks, identify common administrative challenges and potential solutions, and close with a discussion on metrics and reporting. Target audiences: administrators, department leaders, faculty, program managers, diversity+inclusion facilitators, others responsible for and engaged in these activities within higher ed.
