Sustainability Design Thinking Workshop
Join the Sustainability Cooperative (Scoop), the Green Terp Program (Office of Sustainability) and the Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship for a workshop to build our capacity to collaborate and to develop a vision for a more impactful sustainability movement at UMD!

What is Design Thinking?

- Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions to prototype and test. Involving five phases—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test—it is most useful to tackle problems that are ill-defined or unknown.

What is Scoop?

- The Sustainability Cooperative at the University of Maryland, fondly known as SCoop, is a collective of student organizations interested in improving sustainability on campus. Founded by students in 2018, SCoop continues to grow and host more opportunities for members of our community and for the larger university and city. By joining together, we optimize funding opportunities, and individual SCoop member organizations gain an advantage in building interdisciplinary project teams. The cooperative meets regularly to network and workshop concepts and projects, allowing for increased collaboration and innovation as well as elevated awareness of local initiatives!

What is the Green Terp Program?

- Green Terp is a social marketing effort to promote environmentally responsible choices. Any student at UMD can commit and certify as a Green Terp. The program engages students with an action checklist, ongoing support and eco gear to encourage sustainable choices.  The program is a cross-campus partnership with the Department of Resident Life and the Office of Sustainability, along with Dining, DFSL, Facilities Management, DOTS, and more.

What is the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship?

- The UMD Office of the President launched the Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship with the mission to engage all UMD students in innovation and entrepreneurship. The Academy embraces a “learning by doing” mentality and actively engages students, faculty, and staff in innovation tools and mindsets, such as Design Thinking and Lean Startup, to empower them to become creative problem solvers.
