Learn How to Support Yourself & Others in Challenging Times

Life's not always easy and sometimes we need help. Find out how to identify those times for yourself and for others and how to seek help. The workshop will take place at 10 am on Saturday, November 12th at The Hotel which is located at 7777 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD 20740.

Mental health is a topic we need to talk about as more and more adults and children struggle with anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges in increasingly difficult times. Far too often, people suffer in silence, afraid to admit that they need help and worried about the stigma. At the same time, friends and family aren’t sure how to provide support, fearful that they could make the situation worse. In this workshop, learn how to:

  • Notice mental health concerns when they are present in oneself and in others (i.e. basic signs.)
  • Respond when noticing it in others including basic tips for asking tough questions, showing empathy and suggesting they seek help.

  • Respond when noticing struggles in ourselves (e.g. self-care tips, resources for seeking help including therapy, hotlines and support groups, and asking for support.)

The workshop will be led by:

  • Dr. CJ Polihronakis, Staff Psychologist in the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland. Dr. Polihronakis has a Ph.D. and a M.Phil in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University; an Ed.M. in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University; M.A. in School Counseling from Columbia University; and a B.A. in Psychology & English from Georgetown University.
  • Chloe Goldbach, Doctoral Psychology Intern in the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland. Chloe has a M.A. in Psychology from the Southern Illinois University and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Florida.

There will also be a Q&A at the end of the presentation.
