HONOR NATIVE LANDS

Before we begin, we invite you to take a moment to reflect on and acknowledge the Indigenous roots of the land that you’re on. The land that the University of Maryland and The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center resides on today is home to the Piscataway tribe. We encourage you to use a resource like native-land.ca to learn more. You can also read about land acknowledgements from the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture.

PREPARING FOR THE EVENT

Find a well-lit area and surface for you and your device, and gather the following materials:

  • Pencil or Pen
  • Watercolor Paper or Mixed Media Paper. You can use printer paper or thin paper, but it may wrinkle easily.
  • Watercolor Paints: Either a dry palette or in liquid tubes – Marjorie will be using a dry palette from Koi Water Colors. For liquid watercolors, squeeze just a little bit of the pigment into a palette and mix with water until it reaches your desired opacity. You can also use food coloring, coffee or soy sauce – just make sure to wash your brushes thoroughly afterwards.
  • Paintbrush. For beginners, we recommend Round and Flat brushes since they are the most common. If you do not have a paintbrush, you can use a toothbrush, a spare make-up brush, a slice of a cleaning sponge or cotton swabs – basically anything that can carry water and pigment.
  • Reference Photo
  • Paper towel or rag to clean your brush between colors

GRAB SOME GRUB

Throughout SummerFest, we’ll be featuring Black owned restaurants in the vicinity of the University of Maryland. If you’re close to campus, we encourage you to support these local businesses!

Gangster Vegan Organics

Riverdale, MD

Gangster Vegan Organics (GVO) is redefining what it is to be "Gangster." Influenced by a culture that glorifies Gangsters, Violence and Drug Dealing, kids are being brainwashed at a rapid rate. GVO is committed to making it "Gangster" to eat healthy, spread love and be kind to one another and the earth. We live in food deserts, surrounded by fast food and convenience. We have to actually "Gangster" our way through all of the poison, just to find access to Real Food!

ABOUT NEXTNOW SUMMERFEST

NextNOW SummerFest is a midsummer interlude of artistic and creative virtual experiences that evoke memories of summers past. Presented by NextNOW Fest at The Clarice, NextNOW SummerFest continues to celebrate imagination, creativity and community -- in a virtual setting.

As we continue to practice physical distancing and other precautions due to COVID-19, we’re missing the usual arts gatherings that we would have experienced over the summer. We’re also testing out a few event ideas and virtual platforms in preparation for a virtual NextNOW Fest 2020 in September. We hope you will join us for a week of creativity and community, and thank you in advance for your patience and feedback!
