Joseph Sciamanna ('18), President and Owner, Heliostatix
This lecture will highlight Joseph Sciamanna's experience starting a biotech company as an undergraduate student in the A. James Clark School of Engineering's Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, highlighting his story, lessons learned, and insights gleaned on barriers to entry, time constraints, and startup funding. The goal of this lecture is to convince students that starting a business early is not only possible, but also advantageous.
Mr. Sciamanna is the owner of Heliostatix Biotechnology and graduate of the University of Maryland. He started his business while a junior at UMD using research on drug delivery he had performed. Within a year of graduating from UMD, he built a multi-million dollar business using what he had learned over his college career at the Clark School.
The Whiting-Turner lecture series hosted by the A. James Clark School of Engineering celebrates the fearlessness of entrepreneurship and brings leading technology enterprise thinkers who deal with the real-world challenges of a fast-paced, global economy to campus. In their lectures and question-and-answer sessions, speakers share their insights and experiences as well as their lessons and advice, inspiring students and faculty to apply new ideas and approaches to their careers and ideas for new ventures.
