Support the Fischell Department of Bioengineering matching gift challenge!

UMD's Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BIOE) has launched this unique funding challenge to support our students & advance critical human health research.

Thanks to the generosity of BIOE Advisory Board member Steven Lehrer, managing director of SBLehrer LLC, BIOE is launching its first-ever matching campaign. All gifts, up to $10,000, will be matched dollar for-dollar by the Lehrer Family until the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.

But – we need your help! Every dollar raised through this campaign will directly support the following departmental needs:

  • Student-driven research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes a new campaign to offer paid undergraduate research opportunities for students with financial need, in efforts to eliminate the painful decision between paid work & invaluable research experience.

  • Student clubs & organizations, including funds for on- & off-campus events & in-demand speakers/workshops. This includes new channels to connect alumni & current students with partners in industry, academe, the nonprofit sector, and more.

  • Student learning spaces, including our student lounge space in A. James Clark Hall. This provides expanded access to in-demand study and teamwork space our students can call their own.

  • Department-driven research spanning all aspects of human health causes: from cancer vaccines, to tendon research, and from biomedical device development to biocomputational engineering. Our students and faculty are working tirelessly to address many of the world’s most pressing health needs. In the 16 years since our department’s launch, BIOE’s alumni network has grown to nearly 1,500 graduates – including industry movers and shakers, government researchers, startup founders, STEM outreach leaders, and, of course, the next generation of bioengineering faculty.

Your gift will help us build on this momentum in transformative new ways. No gift is too small; remember – every dollar you give is worth double your gift!
