Wellness Program Success!!! Since the Wellness Program began in 2015, you’ve helped achieve a steady engagement rate growth, a reduction of over $16 million in costs associated with heart disease, a 70% increase in preventative cancer screening, a 55% increase in other key preventative screenings, an increase of 35% in diabetes treatment compliance. The Wellness Plan has several important benefits. First, it helps you and your enrolled spouse work with your medical providers to get and/or stay healthy. Second, it saves you money on your healthcare. Third, it will save money for the State in the long term by focusing our healthcare dollars on prevention. It’s your choice whether or not to participate, but there are advantages to doing so. Continue reading on page 4.

Telework Challenge Teleworking even just one day a week is a great way to cut down on the time and cost of commuting, improve productivity and enhance overall work-life balance in your office! Supervisors and employees, read the university’s telework guidelines and have a conversation about teleworking. To encourage teleworking among eligible employees, DOTS will host a Telework Challenge from Monday, June 18 to Friday, August 10. Employees who log their telework “trips” in the Smart Commute Platform can earn points that can be redeemed for weekly and grand prize raffles. Log at least six telework days during the challenge and you will automatically earn a Smart Commute t-shirt and be entered into the grand prize raffle for a Microsoft Surface Pro! JUNE 2018 2

June is National Safety Month

Everyone can get involved in reducing the risk of injuries. Together, we can share information about steps people can take to protect themselves and others.

Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. But there are many things people can do to stay safe and prevent injuries.

Lunch & Learn

Make a difference: Spread the word about ways to reduce the risk of injuries. Encourage communities, workplaces, families, and individuals to identify and report safety hazards. How can National Safety Month make a difference? We can all use this month to raise awareness about important safety issues like: • • • •

Medication safety and prescription painkiller abuse Driving, biking, and working safely First aid and emergency preparedness Preventing slips, trips, and falls

Sponsor: National Safety Council

June’s Lunch & Learn will focus on Men’s Health. Take action to be healthy and safe. Encourage men to make their health a priority. Learn valuable information on screenings, disease risk factors, and healthy lifestyle strategies for men. Lunch & Learn will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 in 3104 Chesapeake Building from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Please register at training.umd.edu Whether you bike to work or school; ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment; or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.

Generous Interpretation What if we chose to assume the best about others? By pausing to reflect on our feelings we can recognize whether we are making a negative assumption about a situation and challenge ourselves to reverse the situation and ask a few questions: “What is the most generous assumption I can make,”? “What am I noticing about my role in this situation,”? or “Why would a reasonable, rational and decent person do this”? Generous Interpretation is something we are challenging you to adopt when it comes to your employees, colleagues, and even in your personal life. Here are a few examples that may help you:

Story:

Fact:

Generous Interpretation:

You are late responding to emails.

You respond to emails 1-2 days later.

You are taking the time to carefully craft a well put together response.

You seem very standoffish.

You never speak to others when passing in the hallway or on the elevator.

You are very deep in thought about the items on your to-do list.

You don’t care to socialize with your co-workers.

You declined to attend all of the afternoon social events in the office (baby showers, birthday celebrations, work anniversaries, etc.)

You have family obligations (for example pick up from daycare/school), requiring you to leave work earlier in the afternoon, which is usually when office social events are scheduled.

You are inconsiderate and passive aggressive.

When I was coming up to the elevator, you closed the doors so that I was unable to get on.

You may not have seen me coming, or you may not have been able to stop the doors from closing in time.

Wellness Plan Activities for 2018 You Save Money by Participating! Employees, Non-Medicare eligible retirees and spouses who are enrolled in a medical plan are eligible to participate. When you and your enrolled spouse complete the wellness activities for 2018, all of your visits to your PCP are free and you could also receive a $5 reduction for your specialist copay until the end of the calendar year! The sooner you complete your activities the sooner you start saving.

If You Do Not Participate in the Wellness Plan If you choose not to complete the healthy activities, you lose out on free PCP copays and/or reduced specialist copays. Note: There is no penalty or surcharge for not participating.

Wellness Activities First select a PCP (if you haven’t already) and then complete the online health risk assessment provided by your medical plan. It’s a good idea to take the assessment every two years to track your progress or to pick up areas for improvement. Within 30-days of completing these two activities you will be able to enjoy free PCP visits for the rest of the year. Please refer to the Wellness FAQ on our website for details on how your plan notifies you that your record has been updated. If you are due for any age or gender preventive screenings, and your doctor recommends it, you enjoy a $5 reduction in your specialist copays for the rest of the year by having the recommended screening(s) done. Keep in mind, the earlier in 2018 you complete the wellness activities, the sooner you enjoy free PCP copays and/or reduced specialist copays. In the event you and/or your enrolled spouse are unable to perform any or all of the wellness activities due to medical reasons, alternative options will be available to receive the rewards. Please contact the Employee Benefits Division for details.

Follow These Easy Steps to Start Earning Your Rewards 1. 2.

Select a PCP (if not already done).

3.

Take the list of screenings with you to your annual physical exam and if your doctor recommends any of the screenings for which you are due, complete the screening(s).

Complete the online health risk assessment. You have a choice between completing your medical plan’s health risk assessment or the State health risk assessment.

Take Advantage of These Wellness Benefits • Reimbursement of weight loss program monthly membership fees. • Wellness coaches – available under all medical plans – to help you reach your nutrition and health

goals. For details, go to our website at: http://dbm.maryland.gov/benefits/Pages/WellnessHome.aspx

Get Started! All employees, non-Medicare eligible retirees, and enrolled non-Medicare eligible spouses need to create their own individual online account the first time they visit their medical plan’s website. If you already created an account in the previous year, you do not need to set up a new account.
