Log in to your Handshake account here! 

Handshake is the University Career Center's online career management platform for University of Maryland students and alumni. Handshake can be accessed online or through the app.

Handshake for Students

If you are a current UMD student, your free account has already been created, you just need to “claim” it. Go to Handshake and enter your directory ID and password.

Handshake is UMD’s career management platform for on-campus, part-time, internship, and full-time jobs. You can find thousands of opportunities in Handshake at any time. 

 

Virtual and in-person appointments with career advisors are scheduled through the Handshake system. 

  • Log into Handshake
  • Click on the Career Center menu option on the left side of your screen. 
  • Select Appointments
  • At the top of the page select “Schedule a New Appointment”. 

You will be able to choose from a variety of appointment dates, times, topics, and mediums (in-person or virtual).

Claim your spot a wide variety of career workshops and employer events through Handshake. Click on “Attend an Event” on the top of the home screen or the “Events” menu option on the left side of your screen. By clicking on the name of the event you can read a description of the event and register for it. Learn more about our events.

Customize your Handshake profile, with your academic information, career interest, skills and courses - this will allow employers to search and reach out to you in Handshake. A complete profile helps Handshake push relevant opportunities that match your major, interests and skills.

Upload and store up customized resumes, cover letters, and other job search documents for use with online applications.

Employers coordinate with the Career Center to host interviews with UMD for entry-level jobs and internships.  Interview applications and scheduled interview slots are managed through Handshake.

Within Handshake, access the Career Center’s exclusive career exploration and job search tools (once logged in, click "Career Center" and then "Resources)", which include:

  • FOCUS 2: Major/career exploration self-assessments
  • Big Interview: Practice mock interviews virtually 
  • Firsthand/Vault: Employer/Industry guides. Must access through Handshake to access the UMD subscription. 
  • GoinGlobal: Country career guides, international resources for students working/studying abroad

Common FAQ for Students

Current Students: Your account has already been created, you just need to “claim” it. To do that, log in to Handshake and enter your UMD directory ID and password.
 

New Students: Newly admitted students must register for classes before they may login to Handshake.  Around the second week of August we will create accounts for all newly admitted fall students.  Watch for an email announcing that your account is ready. Do not create a new account for yourself—that will only lead to duplicate accounts.
 

Alumni: If you graduated less than one year ago, log in to Handshake and enter your UMD directory ID and password. If you graduated more than a year ago, please request an account by emailing ucc-studenthelp@umd.edu or call the front desk at 301-314-7225.

Login to your Handshake account and click on the Career Center tab on the left navigation bar. Click Appointments, here you can cancel or reschedule a career advising appointment

Login to your Handshake account and click on your initials or photo in top right corner. Click "Settings" and update the Work Authorization section of your Handshake profile.

Handshake for Employers

Registration is simple and posting is free of charge! Create an employer account on Handshake and connect with the University of Maryland - College Park. 

Once you register and are approved as an employer, you can begin posting your organization’s opportunities within Handshake. For assistance posting positions, review this guide. Typically, positions posted in Handshake by approved employers are available once posted in the system. We aim to approve all job postings within 2 business days.

Registration for UMD University Career Center career fairs takes place within Handshake. Review the list of upcoming career fairs & industry events and register to attend.

Employers may post events in Handshake and the team will market employer events to the UMD student population. If interested in hosting your own virtual or in-person event, visit our Host an Event page. Once confirmed, you’ll be able to view the details of your event within the system.

Posting a full-time jobs and internships

Posting a short-term local, part-time job

  • The University Career Center partners with QuadJobs, an online platform connecting college students with local flexible part-time or one-time jobs in support of individuals or local businesses. Some of the types of roles best suited for QuadJobs include, but are not limited to childcare, dog-walking, tutoring, house work, etc. Register and post on QuadJobs.

Log into Handshake and click on on your name in the upper right hand corner to update your profile. If you have questions, email ucc-recruiting@umd.edu

Handshake for Alumni

Employers specifically seeking UMD alumni use Handshake to post full-time, internship and part-time positions. You can search by industry, job function, geographic location, major, and other criteria.  Use the system’s job alert feature to receive notifications of new postings matching your interests.

Alumni within one year of graduation can schedule virtual and in-person appointments with career advisors through Handshake. Alumni more than one year out have access to a brief consultation and a wide variety of resources available via the Alumni Association.
